Mio Kato is extremely bullish on PSVR2 and believes volumes could massively surprise to the upside - he forecasts ~3.5m units in the launch quarter and ~10m units in the next full year. Even if Mio is wrong, all evidence suggests that market expectations are subdued enough that downside risk is limited. Pricing is unlikely to follow a loss leader model and thus while sales may initially not lead to additional hardware profit, as software sales pick up and/or if PSVR2 leads to additional PS5 sales, profit contribution overall should be strong. Marketing expense was also unlikely to be excessive, providing a further boost to operating profit.

PSVR2 is increasingly looking like a key differentiating factor for PlayStation - Mio Kato believes Sony is in the best position to dominate the VR space and continued VR title announcements into the launch of the PSVR2 could act as a catalyst for the stock which he still considers too cheap. The balance of AAA and indie titles looks good as do prospects for building momentum for the new PlayStation Plus plans. Continued revenue expansion from title launches on PC will also support revenue growth.

An Epic partner - Mio Kato has been arguing that significant collaboration between Sony and Epic Games is likely in forming the key infrastructure for the metaverse. The recent Matrix Awakens demo starts to reveal some of the possibilities. In addition, it demonstrates why Mio believes popular metaverse theme names like Meta and Roblox have no realistic chance of competing. Mio also discusses the (increasingly high) likelihood that Tencent decides to sell its stake in Epic with Sony expected to be one of several interested parties.

Sony’s execution on its IP cross selling continues to gather steam and the Jan-Mar quarter could see a slew of major titles releasing on PS5, some old favourites being released for PC to broaden the PlayStation fanbase and a couple of blockbuster movies to boot. If Uncharted succeeds and Spider-Man: No Way Home is successful in accelerating the launch of the Spiderverse, Sony’s IP catalogue could start to almost rival Disney’s.
